The defending FHSAA Class 5A state champion American Heritage Patriots begin their playoff run and hosts a regional quarterfinal against the Merritt Island Mustangs at Heritage Field in Plantation on Friday night. American Heritage, who is undefeated, is looking to capture their fouth state title in the last five years.
Merritt Island(6-3) outscored their opponents 187-96 and allowed ten points per game this year. They had victories over Heritage and Astronaut along with losses to Palm Bay and Rockledge this season. The Mustangs offense will revolve around Debon Peterson who can play wide receiver and wing back.
American Heritage(8-0) rides a 22-game winning streak into this contest. The Stallions have not lost a game since the 2015 FHSAA playoffs. They have outscored their opponents 279-51 this season and averaged 34 points for along with six points against per game.
The Patriots have a balanced attack on offense with Cam Smith at quarterback. Their rushing game has three options with running backs Jordan Johnson, Miles Jones and Tyler Jones. Smith can throw the ball off to wide receivers Anthony Schwartz, Joshua Alexander and Tyler March. Defensive back Patrick Surtain Jr. leads their tough defense.
